I come from Stamford in Lincolnshire, and we used to get some of the main
bands at a cinema / theatre in Kettering about twenty miles away. In about 1950,
the Squadronaires came one Sunday night. They played all the normal big band
tunes. During the concert they’d introduce the band members. The leader
Jimmy Miller introduced the drummer who he said was Phil Stevens. Someone
in the front row said: ‘No, Phil Seamen.’ Jimmy apologised and said: ‘Phil
Seamen, sorry about that.’ Phil hadn’t been around long. He’d be depping for
Jack Cummings who was their regular drummer.
